Pictures of Highland Lochs: Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Loch Leven, Loch Fyne

The Lochs in the Highlands of Scotland are very impressive. Some of them like Loch Ness are very famous. There are a lot of lochs in Scotland, each with its own story. Loch Awe is the longest of the Scottish Lochs while Loch Ness is the deepest.

Cutting the West Highlands there is a series of 4 lochs: Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, Loch Linnhe and by far the most impressive, Loch Ness, followed by the Caledonian Canal. They form the so called the Great Glen that runs nearly 100 km long.

Fort Augustus was named after one of King George II's sons after the defeat of the Jacobite Uprising in 1715. The son later became the infamous "Butcher" Cumberland who defeated the Jacobite Rebellion at Culloden in 1745.

The Caledonian Canal divides Fort Augustus. Within the village there are the locks. Next to them you can see the true Loch Ness monster.

Loch Fyne is a long sea loch, near Inveraray Castle. Inveraray is a small town that is the ideal starting point for West Highlands exploration. Loch Fyne is half an hour away from Loch Lomond and one hour from Oban.

Picture of Loch Leven In the middle of the loch there is an island where the MacDonalds of Glencoe are buried. The MacDonalds of Glencoe were murdered by the Campbells in the now famous Massacre of Glencoe.

Loch Lomond Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is now one of the most famous lochs in Scotland. It is part of the newly founded "Loch Lomond National Park".

The fame of Loch Lomond comes partly from the well known song "Loch Lomond" that goes "Me and my true love we'll never meet again on the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond" and partly because it is the most accessible loch (just over an hour from Glasgow).
