Pictures of Peebles: Scottish Games and wedding

The one place I've had the pleasure of visiting is the small town of Peebles which offered me an unique experience not once, but twice. The name "Peebles" is said to derive from an old Welsh word "Pebyl", meaning "a place where tents are pitched". The royal burgh of Peebles. is the third largest town of the Borders.

The town is about half an hour by bus from Penicuik (you can use the 62 First Bus). Some of the nicest things in Peebles are the park where you can often see people waking their dogs, the churches which are numerous for such a small town and last but by no means least, Neidpath Castle.

Another interesting event in Peebles were the Scottish Games Traditionally organised in the Highlands, the small town of Peebles organises its own series of games which include the traditional trials: highland dancing, pipe band contest, drum major contest and highland atheltics which feature the famous "toss the caber" trial. The games are held every mid September in Peebles' central park and by the time you've left you can honestly say that you've experienced Scotland.

I have been fortunate enough to be in Peebles at the right time, just as a Scottish wedding was taking place in the central church. The groom and guests were dressed in traditional tartan kilts (different for each clan) and the series of pictures I managed to take showed a unique Scottish wedding, without the stiff attitude shown in official pictures.

This is the main park in Peebles. The river Tweed flows right through from Neidpath Castle all the way through the town of Peebles. The town occupies both banks of river Tweed. It is a lovely place to stay and enjoy lunch for example.

The main church in Peebles. Its resemblance to St Giles cathedral in Edinburgh is striking. They must have been built by the same pattern, or their top at least.

Another picture of Peebles' main church taken from the road to Neidpath Castle The resemblance to St Giles cathedral is now obvious.

At the Scottish Games in Peebles there were over 30 pipe bands from all over of Scotland. I have never seen so many pipers in my life! I can honestly say I've seen enough of pipers to last me a lifetime. Still, there is nothing that comes close to a pipe band playing live at 5 ft away.

Young drummer Scottish wedding

Most pipe bands were school bands and so some of their members where really young. This one in particular is a very cute picture of a young drummer obviously having trouble holding up his drum.

A unique picture that captures the entire atmosphere of the Scottish Wedding.
