North Queensferry
The Lovely Village at Entrance to the Kingdom of Fife
North Queensferry is a small place in Fife, on the other side of the Firth of Forth. It's a very small village but with a very strong character. South Queensferry on the Edinburgh side of the Firth of Forth is a fairly busy place in comparison.
North Queensferry is an nice and peaceful place with great views over the Forth Bridges and Inverkeithing Bay It is linked to South Queensferry through the Forth rail and road bridges spanning across the Firth. From here onwards we have the Kingdom of Fife with its Coastal Path.
The North Queensferry Coffee Shop
The first thing that springs to mind when I think of North Queensferry is the tiny but extraordinarily neat coffee shop just off the main street. To me, it appeared to be more or less the centre of the village where everyone stops for a nice cup of coffee and ginger cake.
The reason why it impressed me so much was not just the service and home-made cakes and drinks. Never, in my entire life, have I seen a nicer, more spotless toilet The overall attention paid to details is incredible. I just couldn't believe I was in a shop and not at my granny's!.
Unfortunately I cannot recall exactly the address of the coffee shop, only the name "The Queen's Gait Cafe" However, it's impossible to miss it as it's just off the main street.

The pavement slabs in North Queensferry are not just clean but have a NQ engraving I have never seen a place that promotes its identity like that, even if it's a tiny place. It speaks volumes about the people living there. It's not a hive of activity, only a handful of people actually live there but you can see how important it is to them to have a well kept and inviting village for tourists to visit. |
North Queensferry is the starting point of the Fife Coastal Path that runs for a large part of Fife's coastline all the way to Dundee. The path starts in front of the Waterloo Well Follow the sign postings along the path and walk for as long as you like or are able to (don't get carried away or you'll end up in Dundee).
This first section of the Fife Coastal Path covers 2 1/2 miles to Inverkeithing. However, all it takes is a 5 minutes walk to reach high ground with lovely views of the Fort Rail bridge and the Deep Sea World.
Deep Sea World
You may enjoy the peace and quiet of North Queensferry but the kids will love this place. It's got the world's longest underwater tunnel and they can touch the exhibits (but not the ferocious piranhas from the Amazonian Experience).

I had the most bizarre experience when walking along the path. There was a man sitting down on the grass, looking towards Inverkeithing Bay and chanting or singing. It just shows how relaxing people find North Queensferry.
The path follows the coastline all the way to Kinghorn marking the first significant bit of the Coastal Path. Among the attractions are views over Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay, the historic buildings of Donibristle Chapel (18th Century) and St Bridge's Kirk (12th Century).
The path running the north side of Aberdour Golf Course offers nice views over Inchcolm, one of the islands in the Firth of Forth and its Abbey. Aberdour is also famous for its Silver Sands, one of four excellent beaches in Fife.
Queensferry Lodge Hotel - A Hotel With Great Views
You can see the hotel on the left side just as you come off the road bridge. The hotel gives you a great vantage point as it's so high up. At sunrise or sunset the views is just amazing. Inside the hotel there the Forth Bridge Visitor and Tourist Information Centre. See some pictures taken from the Queensferry Lodge Hotel.
