Fife Weather

Do Not Travel to Fife's Coast on Hot Days

Having made two trips to Fife in August and September of 2003 I can say that travelling on hot days is a bad idea. While further inland the weather was absolutely brilliant, lovely blue sky and warm sunshine, on Fife's coast I got mist virtually all day I would complain to the Fife Tourist Board if I knew they could do something about it.

Because the North Sea is very cold, even in the summer, when the land gets too hot, it causes mist to form. As a result, you can not even see the Isle of May at all, nevermind see to the other side of the Forth in East Lothian. The days were generally dull as you can see from the pictures with sun coming out occasionally. Although the weather was not perfect, both trips to Fife were extremely enjoyable.

On my first trip there you could see mist literally rolling towards you. While this may not affect the average tourist, for photography, the mist did not help one bit. In the afternoon however, the mist burned off literally in minutes and left glorious sunshine in Anstruther.

Do Travel to Fife on Hot Days if You Want to Cool Off

The sea breeze, occasional bursts of sunshine and even when you do get great sunshine weather is perfect to cool off The summer of 2003 was one of the hottest Scotland has ever seen. The weather in Fife was a most welcome relief in that respect.

Best Time to Travel to Fife

Any season has the pefect weather for Fife with a bit of luck. What you're looking for is sunshine, and lots of it. Sunshine gives a whole new light to the East Neuk villages. The colours are more vivid and photographs come out excellent.

If you're planning to spend a day in Fife, the best way to make sure the weather is to your liking is to call the Tourist Information Centre in Anstruther (Tel: 01333 311073) and ask them (all they have to do is look outside).

Spring Weather in Fife

Spring may be a bit cool to travel to Fife but everything starts blooming then, the air is clean, the sky is blue and the best of all, the villages are not crowded.

Summer Weather in Fife

The summer temperatures are generally higher but the breeze from the North Sea makes it cooler than it is further inland. The colours are not as vidid as they are in the spring and there is risk of mist.

Autumn Weather in Fife

The light in autumn has a very warm feel to it. The autumn colours are vivid and being the low season, accommodation in Fife is cheaper.

Winter Weather in Fife

Winter is a rare chance to have the villages all to yourself. It will be colder but the flexibility to make the most of East Neuk is irreplaceble.
